On-base vehicle storage

Yes, there is free on-base vehicle storage in nine cases out of every ten involving military deployment. Every military base has free on-base storage for the vehicles of military members.  There are, however, several issues you must be aware of with this option.  First, that military parking may be full.

It happens! It is highly unusual but it does happen.  We know of soldiers who found out, literally days before shipping out, that the military parking lot on-base was full.  As you might suspect, this called for some serious scrambling to find suitable vehicle storage before deployment.

Secondly, military car storage only protects your car from vandalism and theft.  There is no such thing as  climate controlled car storage on a military base. Thus, you have no protection from extreme temperatures which cause oxidation; you have no protection from hailstorms or tornadoes of snowstorms or windstorms. Now this may not be a factor to you if you drive a fairly inexpensive car.  Someone driving a vehicle with a Kelly Blue Book value of $3000 may not be concerned with climate controlled car storage, but someone driving a $25,000 Ford F-150 needs to at least consider that type of climate protection.

And lastly you need to think about premium services.

Many a solider has returned from a nine-month deployment to find his tires flat, his batter dead, and other problems with his vehicle. This is because vehicles are meant to be driven, and stagnant vehicles mean problems will arise sooner or later.  Some of the better vehicle storage facilities offer premium services like battery and tire checks, regular engine start-up, and even basic engine diagnostics.  Yes, you pay extra for these premium services, but you also return home knowing your vehicle runs as well as it did the day you left it.

So much to think about!

Listen, this is our recommendation: if you drive a vehicle with a low resale value, we strongly urge you to seek out on-base military parking, or go wild and rent a mini storage unit at a self storage facility for $40 per month and call it good.

But if you drive a high-end vehicle, one which has a significant value, you really can’t afford to leave it in a base storage lot. Too much can go wrong with your vehicle with on-base car storage, and you really can’t afford that with a big investment like your car or truck.  So our recommendation is to let “value” determine what kind of storage for cars you seek.
